The Mahindra Alturas made its official debut in India last week. This full-sized premium SUV was launched at a base price of INR 26.95 lakh. While the top-spec variant costs INR 29.95 lakh to own.
Due to its prices, it competes with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq.
Being a full-size premium SUV with an on-road price exceeding INR 30 lakh, it comes with all sorts of features and well as safety kit that you will expect from a vehicle of its category.
As it turns out, the Mahindra Alturas has scored an impressive 5-star safety rating by the Korean NCAP. The Korean NCAP uses the same methods and parameters to award a vehicle its safety rating as the Euro NCAP.
Hence, effectively, the Mahindra Alturas sold in India is a 5-star safety rated SUV.
The interesting thing to note here is that the Alturas’s main competitor, the Toyota Fortuner to has the same safety rating.
The Alturas is based on the G4 SsangYong Rexton currently on sale in the Europeanย markets.

For the Alturas, in addition to changing the name, the homegrown automaker has given Mahindra styling cues as well.
The move to sell the next-generation Rexton in India as a Mahindra product is due to the low sales of the previous generation Rexton.
SsangYong as a brand was not able to gain popularity in the Indian market.
With the Mahindra Badging and a new name, the Alturas hence has a better chance of performing in the Indian market.

The Mahindra Alturas, not only costs less than its immediate competition but also offers more features and creature comforts.
For instance, it comes with a 360-degree surround view camera along with soft-touch materials on the dashboard. None of its competitors offers these features.
The Alturas is currently on sale in India only with a diesel engine. This oil-burner is a 2.2-litre unit capable of producing 170 BHP of power along with 420 Nm of peak torque.

It is available in two variants. The base version comes with 2WD. While the top-end variant comes with 4WD. Both these variants offer a 7-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes Benz. There is no manual gearbox on offer.
