Bajaj Auto is planning to introduce an electric scooter by 2020, which will be placed on the higher-end or premium-end pricing range.
Many two-wheeler brands in the market are gearing up for launches of electric scooters as well as electric bikes. The list includes TVS, Bajaj, Hero and more.
At a recent interview to CNBC TV18, Rajiv Bajaj, CEO of Bajaj Auto, confirmed about its plan to launch an electric scooter. Bajaj aims to introduce the E-Scooter by 2020.
The homegrown two-wheeler maker plans to introduce a premium electric scooter. It indicates that the pricing will be towards the premium-end and no towards the cheaper end. Rajiv Bajaj quotes it would be a “Tesla-like’ electric scooter.
The specifications and further details stand unknown at this time. However, we know what price range will it fit in. We expect it to rival against the likes of Ather 340 and 450.
In India, the electric-scooter concept is growing. There are about 10 electric scooters in the market and some are doing really good. However, almost all of them are priced under Rs 60,000, making it much cheaper.
Talking about Ather 340 and 450, they both are the most premium electric scooters in India. Priced upward of Rs 1 Lakhs, they come with futuristic features. Bajaj Auto plans to come in this price segment.
Ather scooters get features such as rear mono-shock suspension, Bluetooth connected speedometer, turn-by-turn navigation, over-the-air updates, front and rear disc brakes and much more.
Ather 340 comes with a range of 60 kms, offering a top speed of 70 km/hr. Ather 450 comes with a range of 75 kms, generating a top speed of 80 km/hr.
With Bajaj, we expect similar kind of features list combined with great styling and affordability too. Bajaj Auto will introduce the electric scooter with many advanced features.
As of now, the EV concept is still growing in India. For an emerging market like us, most of the automakers are planning to launch EVs, but after 2-3 years. Starting 2020, we expect the EV concept to take a leap in the Indian market.
Unlike Bajaj Auto, Hero Motocorp plans to stay out of the premium electric scooter segment. It rather prefers to stick to the mass produced electric scooter segment, with its 4 electric scooters. Out of them, Hero Photon is the most selling electric scooter in India.
Speculations say that TVS is also working on the electric vehicle concept. However, it is rumoured to introduce an electric bike in India first. A couple of electric bikes are also under development for our market.
